Radiant heating might sound like a new, revolutionary concept, but it has, in fact, been around in different forms since Roman times, and remains a preferred method of heating in the North Eastern US and many parts of Europe.

Heating a space follows one basic concept: expose air to a heat source and it will, itself, heat up. Heat tends to move towards cold in an effort to keep a local system in balance. This is called radiation. Put your hand close to your computer and you can feel the heat radiating from the inside out. This is the way all heating systems work. Some systems use fans (forced air) or steam radiators to transfer the heat to the surrounding air.

At Radar Plumbing Operations, Inc., we prefer the in-floor hydronic method of radiant heating. That is, we prefer to heat with hot water circulated through pipes in the floor. Imagine setting your bare feet down on your hardwood floor first thing in the morning - and not having the shock of a freezing cold surface touching your tootsies. In-floor heating transfers its heat directly to the heart and soul of your home, not only making your floors warm and cozy, but it also helps minimize energy loss.

Here's a thought... Do you already have a forced-air system in your home? In most cases, radiant heating systems can be retro-fitted into existing spaces. Hot water is generally supplied in one of three ways: A standard natural gas or electric water heater, a tankless natural gas water heater, or a Buderus solar hot water system. Once the water is heated, it is circulated at between 90 and 110 degrees through pipes in the floor. The cool water returns to the heater, and the cycle begins again. Systems can be closed (the hot water stays in the pipes) or open (the radiant heating water is shared with domestic applications like washing machines or kitchen faucets), depending on application and situation.
